Can
I get a scholarship?
No,
ice hockey at Cal is a club sport. The club sports
program does not offer scholarships.
Can
my hockey talent alone get me admitted to U.C. Berkeley?
No.
Hockey
or no hockey, is it difficult to get admitted to U.C.
Berkeley?
Yes.
With ~40,000 applicants competing for 4,000 spots
each year, getting into U.C. Berkeley is no easy
feat. Cal is consistently ranked among the top schools
in the United States. These are the academic
credentials of the most recent group of freshmen.
How
do competitive applicants who also play hockey get
recruited?
If
you apply, and if you are the type of student who
can compete with the thousands of other applicants,
and you're a good hockey player, we may be able
to improve your odds. Within our limits of personnel,
time and money we'll try to watch you play. We'll
interview your coaches and write a letter of recommendation,
which goes in with your U.C. Berkeley application.
This won't hurt, and might help.
Is
there a simple test for whether I am barking up the
wrong tree?
Yes.
When it comes to turning non-students into student
players, long experience has taught us this -- Generally,
you should be more interested in the school than
in the team at this point. So ask yourself why you
are interested in Cal... as a hockey player looking
for a hockey team or as someone looking for the
best education and a chance to continue playing?
I've
read this section and I understand it. I'm interested
in the school and in the team. What should I do now?
Contact
the team
recruiter. You must include all your academic
credentials as well as your hockey experience.
How
do I really get the attention of Cal ice hockey recruiting?
Check
out the school, and if you like what you see, apply
to U.C. Berkeley and tell
us. Visit the campus, we'll show you around.
